A Day Fly Fishing With Beginners Bub And Rick
/Rick and Bub were in Queenstown for a work conference and had a free day to explore a local river. Both had never fly fished before but were keen to give it a go.
We arranged a 9am pick up and headed South to the Mataura river for the day. The forecast was good and the river had been fishing well over the previous few weeks. We arrived at the river and set up the rods then headed for an open piece of water free of snags and overhanging bush , so the lads could practice some basic casting drills . With in 20mins both Bub and Rick had picked up the basics and were ready to go in search of some feeding trout !
We didnt see many fish out feeding in the open or the ones that we did were sitting in very tough positions to cast to ,so we concentrated on the riffles where the guys could blind fish with double nymph rigs under indicators. Both had a couple of fish eat their flies but unfortunately due to having too much slack line they didn't get a good hook set on any of them. Midday saw us move to another section of river just upstream where again we focused on the riffles with Rick hooking and landing a wee 2lb brown trout , his first fish on the fly !
A fun day with 2 top blokes , safe travels and enjoy the rest of your time here in New Zealand .
