Drifting The Weed Beds
/A recent drift fish with my son Louie and his Grand Dad on a sunny, calm Sunday was just what was needed after a 6 week lock down due to Corona Virus. We hadn’t had the boat out on the water since mid January due to my busy guide commitments and then the weather which just didn’t play ball when we had a free day !
An orange hot head woolly bully in brown pulled across the top of the shallow weed beds, deep gutters and drop offs proved the undoing of both the above fish. The Airflo Clear Camo Intermediate fly line is perfect for this type of fishing as it blends right into its surroundings. The ultra supple Camo Core and clear PU coating blend to create a suppleness making it perfect for gentle presentation and a distinct lack of knotting on a hand twist retrieve, even on the coldest of days.
We scored a perfect day with light breeze blowing from the South which slowed us down when drifting with current from the inflow river. We sat just off the deep channels on the weed bed and picked up the majority of our fish along the edge of the drop offs and weed bed. A couple fish hit as the flies were sinking through the water column but most on the retrieve half way back to the boat.
