Autumn Fly Fishing
/Autumn fly fishing in New Zealand
After a long dry hot summer with no rain for almost 7 weeks things got fairly tough out there on the water ,with very low river and stream levels in the Central Otago region ,in fact most of the South Island for that matter !Now Autumn is here , I enjoy this time of year for a number reasons, the number of anglers on the water have dropped, the days start cooler but warm nicely bringing the mayfly hatches, and in general they are much calmer with little or no wind most days .
The bridge fish...very skinny water this season meant fish were spread about more in the rivers, faster moving sections with more oxygenated water and deeper cooler pools were the hot spots.Crazy to see the debris high up in the bridge structure from the previous months flooding and then to see the river in drought conditions a few months later!
